What is Glass Waste Recycling?

Recycling glass is the process of converting waste glass into useful products. A pellet is glass that has been crushed and is ready for remelting. There are two types of cullet: internal and exterior. The internal cullet of glass manufacturing consists of defective products that are identified and rejected during the manufacturing process as well as materials that are modified during production (such as differences in thickness and colour) and offcuts. The external cullet, also known as external glass, is glass that has been collected or processed for recycling. All external cullets (pre- and post-consumer) are considered waste.

Recycling glass saves energy, water, and natural resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and minimizes the need for raw materials, all while minimizing waste at landfills. When it comes to environmental sustainability, glass recycling is up there with better choices. This is due to the fact that glass may be recycled indefinitely without compromising its quality. For example, returnable (refillable) glass bottles can be reused up to 30 times before needing to be recycled, lowering our carbon footprint significantly. Recycled glass (cullet), on the other hand, not only melts at a lower temperature, saving energy consumption, but it also does not lose any material during the melting process. As a result, we incorporate up to 40% cullet into our material batches.

Let us join together to reduce our carbon footprint by promoting ethical consumption and recycling.

Glass Recycling Process

As one of the largest glass recycling companies in Manchester, we feel it is our responsibility to promote positive environmental change in the package manufacturing industry by reducing the total carbon footprint of processed glass on the environment. As a result, we’ve developed new, holistic sustainability strategies that have assisted us in further reducing our carbon footprint. Below are the steps involved in glass recycling:

To begin the recycling process, any glass collected individually is returned to one of our state-of-the-art recycling facilities.

The glass goes through a pre-treatment process that uses blowing air to remove any paper or plastic. Magnets are used to remove any metal things.

It is then colour-sorted and cleaned to remove any remaining contaminants.

The material is then crushed, heated, and moulded into new bottles and jars. Glass is a highly adaptable material with almost endless applications, so recovering as much as possible makes perfect sense.

Currently, we are able to recycle around 70% of all glass packaging produced. Despite the significant progress made, there is clearly much more to be done. Also, about 200,000 tons of glass are dumped into landfills each year by the hospitality industry, including hotels, bars, and restaurants. Therefore, glass waste disposal plans are essential for companies that generate large amounts of glass waste since they significantly reduce environmental impact.
